Behavioral Health Counselor

Shelbyville, MI

  • P r ovide essential mental health services to the Tribal Community as part of an interdisciplinary medical team.
  • Conduct behavioral health assessments, develop treatment plans, and lead individual and group therapy sessions (including substance use groups).
  • Complete screenings, intakes, admissions, and orientation and ensure client consent, releases, and treatment plans are up-to-date.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation to meet program standards (IHS, CARF, JCAHO) and ensure continuity of services and billing.
  • Collaborate with Gun Lake Tribe health care providers as part of the interdisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to our tribe's health care.
  • Travel as needed for program requirements, meetings, and continuing education.
  • Work  full-time (40 hours) Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with one evening per week and the flexibility of one remote day per week.

We seek a Behavioral Health Counselor to provide clinical and recovery-focused outpatient counseling and treatment coordination within the Tribal community. In this role, the services include individual and group counseling, as well as education on wellness, recovery, and resiliency for individuals at risk for or presenting with mental health, substance abuse, or other addictive behaviors. Our Ideal Behavioral Health Counselor:

  • Experienced: Master's degree in Behavioral Health, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field and 3 years of experience in behavioral health counseling. Experience with substance use disorder, at-risk youth, and Native American populations is preferred.
  • Licenses & Specialties: LMSW, LPC, or LLP with clinical specialty and Michigan professional license. CAADC from MCBAP or developmental plan within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledgeable: Understanding of trauma-related conditions and therapeutic modalities such as TFCBT, DBT, and EMDR, with a strong foundation in DSM diagnostic skills.
  • Strong Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain ideas clearly and actively listen.
  • Culturally-Affirming: Open to Native American cultural traditions and practices, providing culturally sensitive services.
  • Crisis Management: Ability to intervene in high-risk situations, including suicide prevention and working with at-risk youth.
  • Organized & Independent: Able to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently while maintaining strong team relationships.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Teams and general computer skills; experience with EPIC is a plus but not required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and insurance.
