Our Organization and Mission:

The State Attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit is a constitutionally mandated Florida elected position charged with being the chief prosecuting officer of all criminal trials in the circuit. The Second Judicial Circuit includes the counties of Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, Liberty, Franklin and Wakulla. The State Attorney, with his appointed Assistants and other staff, appear in the courts to represent the interests of justice and the people. The mission statement of our agency is “To serve the community through reducing crime and helping to mitigate the catastrophic impact that crime has on victims and offenders, their families, and society as a whole. This includes proactively addressing the causes of criminal behavior, working to achieve justice after a crime has been committed, and using creative strategies to lower recidivism”. The Work You Will Do:

The Second Judicial Circuit is seeking to hire a full time Victim Advocate in our Leon County and Jefferson County office locations. The Victim Advocate will divide their time spending three days a week in the Leon County office and two days a week in our Jefferson County office. This Victim Advocate provides direct support, information and advocacy services to primary and secondary victims (and witnesses) of violent crime through each stage of the criminal and juvenile justice system from the time of arrest through the time of sentencing. In Leon County, the primary caseload involves Robbery, Burglary, Aggravated Battery/Assault, Attempted Murder and similar crimes of violence. In Jefferson County, the Victim Advocate will work with any and all victims of crime needing assistance including Domestic and Sexual Violence, Homicide and Crimes Against Children.

Starting pay: $36,000-$40,000 annually, based on experience

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

An employee in this position is responsible for performing direct support services to victims and their families as needed in cases prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney. Duties include the following:

 

  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support for victims and families
  • Provide ongoing case management and case updates
  • Educate victims about the stages of the court process and what they can expect
  • Assist victims with court preparation and accompaniment during hearings, depositions, and trials
  • Inform victims about their rights in accordance with Florida Statutes and the Florida Constitution and assist them to write a victim impact statement
  • Help victims document financial losses to seek restitution and assist them to complete applications for Victim Compensation
  • Provide community referrals to help meet victims’ ongoing needs
  • Serve as a liaison between the victim and the prosecutor
  • Comply with all terms of the Federal award for VOCA
  • Manage communication with stakeholders
  • Serve the community with competence and respect
  • Supervise and train as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Candidates must have one (1) year of experience in a related field—such as criminal justice, social science, crisis intervention, public contact, or customer service—with duties that include providing victim services. An equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree.
